A SPECTACULAR EXHIBIT OF RARE DUTCH BULBS AT THE NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN
The Glory of Dutch Bulbs: A Legacy of 400 Years

The New York Botanical Garden ranges over a rolling landscape in the borough named for the Bronck family that settled the “land's end.” So it is fitting that for 6 weeks beginning May Day, nearly fifty thousand rare Dutch bulbs – including the tulip ‘Duc van Tol' of 1595, the oldest in Holland's famed collection – will be arrayed in the Garden's crystal palace, the Enid. A Haupt Conservatory. This unprecedented indoor exhibition – inspired by the lavish gardens at Keukenhof, near Amsterdam, renowned for its vibrant spring displays – celebrates 400 years of Dutch supremacy in bulb cultivation. The spectacle will focus on tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for the initial two weeks followed by five extravagant weeks of dazzling lilies, alliums, iris and anemones.

As a complement to the Conservatory extravaganza, the Garden has also created a new 4-season installation by Holland's reigning garden design stars, Piet Oudolf and Jacqueline van der Kloet. The pair have collaborated to create a “Seasonal Walk,” a landscape of rare tulips, flowering perennials and ornamental grasses that, once planted, will transform harmoniously throughout the following year. Repeat visits will be richly rewarded!

Exhibition interpretation and audio tours explaining the history and care of flowering bulbs, including accounts of the “Tulip Mania” of 1637, said to be the first recorded example of a speculative bubble, will be available to visitors.
